Los Angeles County (County) warns consumers to be on the lookout for a scam involving counterfeit checks that appear to be from the County. Recently, the Auditor-Controller and Department of Consumer and Business Affairs have received reports that some individuals have unexpectedly received fake checks that look like legitimate County checks even though they were not County employees or vendors.
If you are not expecting a check from the County, or if you are doing business with another person or business and you unexpectedly receive a County check as payment, do not cash the check. If you are uncertain about the legitimacy of a County check, please call the County’s Check Verification Line at (213) 893-0203.
