Approximately 57 million customers and more than 600,000 drivers had their personal data stolen in a major data breach against the rideshare company Uber.
Names, email addresses, and phone numbers of Uber riders are believed to be compromised in the hack. Uber drivers also had their driver license information compromised.
News reports have stated that Uber was aware of the data breach last year and paid off hackers to protect the information. Uber claims no credit card information or social security numbers were compromised.
Data breaches will continue to occur as we continue to fulfill financial transactions online, use social media and check emails in our daily lives.
Always monitor your credit card statements closely and dispute unauthorized charges.
Check your credit reports annually from each of the three credit reporting agencies.
