The Scam
You get a threatening call from someone claiming to be from LAPD, informing you that your social security number was stolen and that you must make a payment using Bitcoin to avoid further fraud. They provide the toll-free LAPD number as proof they are with the department.
The Truth
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, this is a scam to get victims to give up all of their money. The LAPD is not contacting you regarding a stolen social security number, and they would NEVER ask for payment. If you receive such a call, contact your local LAPD station and your bank.
